2024 is SUCH a good year for music so far. even if nothing else crazy drops in the second half of the year i’ll never forget being spoiled with six amazing albums, five weeks in a row

When will someone within the chart company see sense. There are far too many stagnant songs that have been in the top 100 for years. This is beyond a joke now. 

Something needs to be done because the same songs can't be streamed that consistently for years. Surely the listener would have got bored with it by now. 

Either we ommit streaming from the charts, or just cut the top 100 down to a top 75.

A song is only an official hit if its inside the top 75.  So from 100 to 76 is a waste of our time even viewing it. We need a change.

Please hear yourself for a second, why would the officialcharts remove the most common way to consume music in 2024 and why would you want to omit free info about the charts cause you don't view them as "real hits" like just don't look at it???

what’s just as annoying is as it was getting an acr reset just because of autoplay. i don’t even hate that song but it’s sure as h3ll overplayed now.

Oh, this'll be a good one to get through.

Hola, ciao, guten tag, and all the other European greetings, because today is Chart Day once again my amigos. And yes, I know the Euros kickstart tonight. It's gonna be a chore for me to slog through meaningless dead-rubbers like Denmark vs Slovenia and Turkey vs Georgia. Especially given the fact that I HAVE AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE.

My summer holiday trip to Devon starts on Sunday, so these reviews for the next couple weeks may get a little patchy and will-this-do, or you know, I could just start rhyming again. It worked SO well the last couple times I tried it. Speaking of weird things to admit, not only is my 1-year anniversary on this site approaching fast (a little surprise is in store that day), but it's been nearly 10 LONG YEARS since streaming was applied to the Official UK Top 40. Back when the best-sellers included Ariana Grande, Ella Henderson, Becky Hill, George Ezra and Ed Sheeran. So overall, it's nice to see that nothing has changed since then. 😔

Speaking of nothing changing, err... Taylor Swift hates everyone who wants a new No.1 album. Yet. Another. Darn. Physical. Release. Can you let someone else have a go? PLEASE!? Tough luck then for Bon Jovi who were leading virtually the whole week in a do-or-die battle with Charli XCX for the top spot, eventually slipping to 3rd spot behind the world's most critically acclaimed pop singer that consistently disappoints everyone with her chart positions.

Yes lads, Charli XCX is back, and her new effort 'brat' has ended up unruly 2nd behind the Swifty juggernaut, which is probably because she put literally NO effort in making an album cover. Seriously what was the point? She's also altered all her other albums on the streaming sites to have the same monotone lowercase carefree attitude that seems to be her oeuvre. As per usual, every critic on planet Earth has given it full beans to treat her as if she slapped out The Dark Side of the Moon. Even notoriously stubborn Anthony Fantano has handed it a 10/10, and it's 95 on Metacritic, so clearly that's the Mercury Prize wrapped up then. Personally, I don't really get the hype, to be honest? I mean, von dutch is great and all that, but out of the other stuff I've heard, none of it did much for me. Maybe I just have very high standards. Or maybe I just hate modern pop. Yeah, that seems more like it.

The album release inevitably means that 360 can finally avenge it's No.41 curse by rising to 27, and award her a 16th Top 40 effort to boast from the rooftops. She's also at 47 and 56 but you probably don't care in truth. It may also not be the end because she's just slapped out some new stuff to attach to the album, thanks to making up a website called bratgen and seeing what happens. I tried making up my own, except I made the dumb mistake of doing it after she already announced the special edition and excuse me while I go and cry in my bedroom.

Speaking of Taylor, Cruel Summer has been handed another ACR reset. I would rather drink battery acid, to be honest. And Peggy Gou has limped to 39, which is not great, and Chappell Roan continues to slay all your chart faves that can't get Top 20 albums anymore. Just don't duet with you-know-who, and you'll be fine. Trust me.

Down in the singles and what originally felt like a 1-sided stroll suddenly turned into a 3 horse race where Eminem had to be the filling in the Sabrina Carpenter sandwich. In the end though, Houdini achieves a 2nd week at the summit for Mr Marshall Mathers, which is definitely important because it's his first chart-topper to spend multiple weeks at the summit. Yeah you heard me. All of his previous 10 best-sellers (The Real Slim Shady, Stan, Without Me, Lose Yourself, Just Lose It, Like Toy Soldiers, Smack That, The Monster, River, Godzilla) all got YEETED off the top spot as quickly as they came, so seeing his name at the top is one for the history books. Even though I'd have preferred Sabrina Carpenter to nick it. Not only is Espresso doggedly clinging on in 2nd place, but shooting it's way to No.3 with a bullet is brand new single Please Please Please, a slightly-less appealing track to me in my honest opinion but has quite clearly won everyone over, given it's now running away with the Spotify title. Only a fool would bet against this being No.1 next time out. So thank the lord I'm not that fool.

What else is happening, err, RAYE is back. You know her, right? That girl from those boring dance hits from years ago? Bed? You Don't Know Me? Tequila? Or, for you people who favour recency bias, that time in 2023 when she accidentally turned herself into the new-age Amy Winehouse with My 21st Century Blues, seeing it wrap up more BRITs awards than anyone else can manage, all thanks to the power of escaping your label's relationship with you. Or something akin to that. Anyways, Genesis. is the first music's she's put out since then, and given it's a 7 minute epic that feels more like a (don't make the obvious joke, don't make the obvious joke) Genesis B-side (AAAAAHHHHH 😡🥶🤬) the way it switches tempo every time you get out of your chair. It's also done f*** all on Spotify, meaning she's had to rely on physical copies to get it as high as 22. Not bad and all, but you'd think she would do a little bit better, right? Isn't she supposed to have chart-toppers by the barrelful by now? Hah, only kidding, but given Escapism. was the only real Top 40 success from her album, she probably needs to have a copious rethink. Maybe pretend to be Avril Lavigne next time?

As for the other 2 new entries, No.34 is the debut of another member of a really big group of artists that probably deserve more success. Gracie Abrams has experienced some sort of weird popularity increase in the past few weeks, with Risk nestling near the bottom of the Top 100, and given her debut album reached No.3 last year, it feels somewhat deserved from what I've seen on the forums. This form of motivation, combined with the fact there's a new album on the way, the revelation that Close To You was a originally a demo she had from back in 2017, AND the fact she's supporting Ms. Swift on part of her Eras tour, results in Gracie Abrams grabbing her 1st Top 40 hit. It's also not boring, so therefore I am immediately rooting for her to top the albums one day. Even though it probably won't ever happen.

Sneaking into the bottom rung, however, is a slightly less likeable sight. For those who don't know, Nate Dogg was the go-to-man whenever you wanted some urban music street cred. Regulate, The Next Episode, 21 Questions, Area Codes, all of them employing him to weave his magic in their choruses' like an elegant spider. At least until 2011 anyway, when he passed away from numerous strokes he'd gained, maybe taking his nickname 'King of Hooks' a little too literally. I'd have been perfectly fine with his legacy until today though, because some UK DJ called Flex has taken some snippets of him singing to put on a dance beat, and now 6 In The Morning creeps up to No.40 today. Suffice to say, this isn't the best way to honour his legacy. And I can't help but think it's gonna be Top 10 by August. Just my rotten luck, eh?

Flex isn't the only hapless producer tarnishing poor Nate because a guy called PAWSA has dragged his attempt at a song to 54. Just let the guy rest, we didn't ask for this. Also in the charts, Disclosure climb to 52, for some reason their old hit You & Me has re-entered, Jung Kook is a massive fraud, Ariana Grande has yet another song from eternal sunshine to milk, Tinashe crawls her way to No.71, and there's also debuts for Couch at 89, and a duo from Australia called Royel Otis have slapped their way to 91 with a perfunctory attempt to cover Linger by The Cranberries. It's as boring as it sounds.

I don't have the energy to come up with jokes about what's out to listen to today, but Luke Combs, cassö, Billy Gillies, Tommy Richman, Normani, The Blessed Madonna, Tove Lo and Bru-C all have new stuff. I'm off to watch Scotland get wiped by Germany. See ya.



(P.S. I don't have any information to put here. I got no sleep last night, and this review is the after-effects of this. Leave me be.)

‘Please Please Please’ isn’t on the same level as ‘Espresso’ for me, but I’m glad to see it get off such a strong start. :)

‘The Boy Is Mine’ debuting is fine. There are definitely other tracks from Ariana’s album that I’d rather see get the single push, but this one is growing on me.

Very pleased that ‘Nasty’ entered the chart. Hoping it can become a big hit for Tinashe later in the summer! 😊

my music takeaway for the night: 🥡


  • i prefer espresso to please please please, but the latter is still a very good song! with those numbers, i think sabrina is really a pop princess now. she’s got the charisma to be one.
  • i love how central cee can make the same song everytime - same flow, same beat, etc - and he still gets a top 5. i can’t believe i used to like this dude. wake up!
  • charli, i am so sorry that your former tourmate had to rob you of that number 1 album. losing to bon jovi wouldn’t have been too shabby at all, but i have serious burnout from taylor swift now. but numbers shouldn’t matter, the music should, and you should be proud of yourself for releasing a D4MN good album. it’s so fun. sophie is looking down on you proud.
  • genesis - what an epic song! part 1 sets the scene perfectly and has serious intensity to it, part 2 is where it all cranks up. and the song is a lyrical masterpiece. no wonder you won songwriter of the year back in march. oh, and then you hit us with JAZZ for the final act?! what a song. if sophie’s looking down on charli, i know amy’s looking down on raye. i don’t think it’ll last because of its length, but its a fantastic song.
  • i’m happy for gracie getting her first top 40 hit, and close to you is good, but i wish she got it with something off good riddance (preferably fault line or difficult or i know it won’t work). i hope there’s more sad songs on the secret of us, those are what made good riddance so good for me. but i’ll take close to you :>
  • can we not let 6 in the morning and miles on it be a hit? please?
  • to mirror that, can we give chappell roan more hits? please?
  • zach bryan is one of the only mainstream country acts i like, so to have pink skies stick around for a bit is quite nice, and im a sucker for a harmonica too haha.

‘Genesis.’ debuting just beneath the Top 20 isn’t bad at all given it’s a seven-minute single. Good to see RAYE back in the region and I really hope this has longevity in the charts! ❤️

It doesn’t feel right that ‘Houdini’ is Eminem’s first multi-week #1 when you look at all the classics he’s had, and I don’t see it aging anywhere near as well as some of his biggest hits from the 2000s or even the 2010s have.

Thankfully, I think Sabrina will be back at the top next week. Her new single is getting tons of streams! 😮

yeah houdini has REALLY soured on me already, gotta thank that one annoying coursemate for that along with my stepdad being proper corny with the whole “eminem: the only person that can’t be cancelled”. i don’t wanna hear this again now. meanwhile all his other number ones (minus river) will always be good
